Initial Conception

Initial Vision

Kevin Padian (UCMP) and Eugenie Scott (National Center for Science Education) initiated the idea for a new UCMP Understanding web resource on climate change, taking the idea to the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Eugenie Scott (NCSE), Mark McCaffrey (NCSE), Judy Scotchmoor (UCMP), and Charles Marshall (UCMP) made a second visit to the Moore Foundation which led to a formal proposal. The focus on climate change was expanded to encompass the full suite of Earth system processes that climate change impinges on, from the environmental to the biological. We thank The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (Grant #3416 to UCMP and NCSE) for embracing our vision, and for providing funding to initiate the project. We also thank Minda Berbeco (NCSE), for her central role in the first phase of the project.
